A gynaecologist, Dr. Senyo Misroame, says there cannot be any medical reason why a pregnant woman in labour should not be attended to because she has not shaved.
"She didn't do the right thing" Dr. Senyo Misroame described the actions of the midwife.
A midwife at Koforidua Zongo Health Centre in the Eastern Region allegedly turned away a woman in labour for failing to shave her private parts.
Bushira Safinau, 25, was reportedly ordered by the midwife to go home and shave before she can be assisted to give birth at the health centre.
Heavily pregnant and restless with pain, the lady reportedly pleaded with the nurse to help but her pleas were ignored.
Unable to bear the discomfort and pain, she decided to go back home but delivered on her way.
The incident has infuriated members of the Zongo community in Koforidua, who describe the midwife’s conduct as unprofessional.
The New Juabeng Municipal Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service says it has opened investigations into allegations.
Municipal Director of Health in New Juabeng, Dr Kwaku Senaya says, the midwife in question has denied the story but an investigation is underway to establish the facts.
But commenting on the issue on Joy FM's Super Morning Show Thursday, Dr. Misroame, who is the Medical Director of the Tantra Community Clinic, said if true, it would be unfortunate for any midwife to turn away a woman in labour.
