A leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, has reiterated his call on the government to speed-up the implementation of its policies and programmes. "This call is not to underrate anyone or government's performance but to ensure that things went in the right direction because when government is slow, it loses popularity and efficiency," he said. Dr Spio-Garbrah made the call when addressing the Accra Polytechnic branch of the Tertiary Educational Institute Network (TEIN) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Accra. He spoke on the topic; "Youth in Politics and Decision-Making". Dr Spio-Garbrah said wrestling political power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Government put a great responsibility on the NDC to deliver with speed and urgency to justify the confidence the electorate reposed in it. He said espousing glories of being socialists or capitalists would not win any political power in 2012 because the exigencies of modern politics had shown that ideologies were no longer relevant to the people. Dr Spio-Garbrah who is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation noted that what would make a government popular were the speed and urgency as well as the relevance of its policies and that "China among others had moved away from communism to operate capitalism". He expressed concern about acts by some government appointees and functionaries who had refused to pick phone calls from party foot-soldiers saying this was creating disenchantment in the party because "these people used to pick and even call the foot-soldiers anytime during the electioneering campaign". Dr Spio-Garbrah urged the NDC Government appointees and functionaries to endeavour to serve the interest of the public but not to acquire property to the detriment of the ordinary Ghanaian. He called on NDC supporters and activists not to listen to opponents of the Party but should remain resolute and support its cause. Dr Spio-Garbrah urged the students to always be prepared to take advantage of any opportunity that might come their way. He advised them to be all-round students who could fit into any discipline and not allow money to determine or define their career. Dr Spio-Garbrah urged them to take inspiration from the statement; "Don't think of what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country," to distinguish themselves always.Source: GNA
