The decision by Lower Manya Krobo MP, Michael Teye Nyaunu to criticize President John Mills has opened the pandora’s box in the NDC as leading members send him to the cleaners, whilst he hit back in equal measure.
The MP said the Mills administration has been too slow and doubts if it will be able to implement policies in the 2010 budget.
But a presidential staffer, Nii Lantey Vanderpuiye in an interview with Citi News described the pronouncements as “irresponsible” and “senseless.”
According to him, Nyaunu won the Lower Manya Krobo seat on account of the hard work of President Mills in his constituency, when he Nyaunu was “panting like a dog which has returned from a hunting expedition.”
He cast a slur on Nyaunu’s competence as an MP, accusing him of not liaising with the ministers and even committees in parliament to be abreast of the policies of the government.
Nii Lantey Vanderpuiye challenged the MP to resign from the party if he has lost confidence in its ability to deliver on its campaign promises.
But in a reaction, the lower Manya MP said Lantey’s pronouncement could only come from a “funny guy.”
Describing the presidential staffer as “arm chair strategist and statistician” Teye Nyaunu insisted his hard work and not the favour of the then candidate Mills won him his seat.
“You don’t have to be an arm chair strategist or statistician. We are talking about people who really went to the battlefield and won constituencies. Not people who go round the president to tell him we have done this; we have strategised…” he sniped.
He said his criticisms of President Mills were only to bring to the lime light the frustrations of the party foot soldiers and called on Nii Lantey Vanderpuiye and his ilk in government to put their ears on the ground.
He dismissed claims of incompetence in parliament, touting his credentials as a member of the Ecowas Parliament, insisting, he is abreast of the dealings of government.
Whilst reiterating that government is performing at a snail's pace, Mr Nyaunu said he would rather stay on and criticize than to resign like a coward.
“The time of George Orwells Animal Farm politics is over,” he warned.
In yet another rebuttal Nii Lantey Vanderpuiye accused Nyaunu of suffering from “verbal diarrhea.”
He would resign his position if President Mills dares appoint Nyaunu as a minister, he said.
