The Asunafo North MP Robert Safo Mensah has categorically denied allegations that he stole electric bulbs meant for electrification projects in his constituency.
He is seeking an unqualified apology from the Municipal Chief Executive, Mohammed Kweku Doku, who last week lodged a complaint with the police, accusing the MP of stealing 300 bulbs.
According to the MCE, he had requested for the items from the Volta River Authority (VRA) only to be told the MP had taken the items in the name of the assembly claiming they were supplied to him as MP for the area.
Mohammed Doku, who is also the Chairman of the Municipal Assembly, said he did not cite any documentation covering the items and accused the MP of stealing. He later caused investigations into the matter.
But in a reaction Robert Safo Mensah expressed surprise over the allegations and maintained his innocence.
He explained that he requested for the bulbs in 2008 from the Energy Ministry for electrification projects in his constituency and was directed to pick them early 2009.
He told Luv FM’s Elton John Brobbey he has already distributed over 200 of the bulbs with the Goaso and Mim Senior High Schools, the Bediako, Dominaso and 12 other towns and villages in the community benefiting from it.
He conceded though that he did not receive any waybills covering the items from the ministry to the assembly before taking delivery of the items.
“The most unfortunate aspect was that I didn’t cite any waybill then, which seek to consign the items to the district assembly. It is when this issue came up that I got to know that there was a waybill to that effect, which is highly regrettable.
"But frankly I made the request, and I was instructed by the officials of the ministry to go and pick the items, which I did. My intention was just to support the communities which I have been doing, to execute street lighting project,” he said.
He expressed fears that the unfounded allegations by the MCE will create unnecessary tension in the constituency.
Already supporters of the NPP are said to be demanding immediate apology from the MCE for the allegations which they describe as false and malicious.
The MCE told Luv News there is calm in the constituency.
