The Western Regional Office of Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), over the weekend educated the non-formal sector of the economic need to voluntarily pay taxes to ensure that government maximises development.
The tax education hosted by the Internal Revenue Service, a department of the GRA was also to improve relationship between tax officials and the citizenry.
Mr Charles Thompson, Revenue officer at the small tax unit it is a statutory requirement that tax payers to furnish the department with “return of income” to enable the unit to tax appropriately.
He said often businesses fail to furnish the department with relevant information thereby leading to over or under taxing.
Mr Thompson said proper record keeping is therefore important to ensure that businesses file their tax returns properly to avoid sanctions.
Mr Charles Forson, Head of Public Relations and Communication said the department would continue to engage stakeholders to create understanding in ensuring voluntary compliance and improvement of the sector.
