The Military High Command has confirmed the arrest and detention of some seven soldiers who were reportedly involved in the rescue of a kidnap victim.
According to the Ghana Armed Forces, the officers went on an unauthorised operation in August last year and brutalised some civilians.
The army’s director of Public Affairs, Col. Emmanuel Nibo, denies newspaper reports that the soldiers are being unduly detained.
“As far as the Armed Forces is concerned, the soldiers went on an unauthorised operation so they were referred to the various units, they have been charged and tried and they have been put in the guard room,” Col Nibo said.
He indicated that the soldiers erred against section 54 of the Armed Forces Regulation of the 1992 constitution.
“No commander authorized them to do what they did,” he said.
The army PRO said the soldiers have been given various sentences ranging between 60 and 90 days.
Col Nibo also reacted to publications that the military is on collision course with the police over the matter.
He said such reports are “concocted” and rather far from the truth.
