A superb strike from Jean Makoun gave Lyon the narrowest of leads after the first leg of their Champions League last 16 clash with Real Madrid. The backtracking Real defence let Makoun surge forward and the Cameroon midfielder took advantage to blast a right-footed shot into the top corner.Lyon could have been further in front, with a volley from Cesar Delgado coming back off Iker Casilla's right post.Sergio Ramos put a free header over the bar for an out-of-sorts Madrid. The result means Lyon travel to the Bernabeu in three weeks with an aggregate lead but Madrid should be more than satisfied with the scoreline, particularly after such a stop-start performance.Incredibly, Manuel Pellegrini's side have not qualified for the quarter-finals of the Champions League since 2004 and will need a much-improved display up front at home if they are to change such a dismal record.Lyon, who contributed to Liverpool's early exit from the competition, will need an even stronger defensive display but can take credit for making a side of stars look so ordinary, particularly in the first half.Sidney Govou thumped a couple of early volleys past the upright for the hosts while Gonzalo Higuain just failed to control in the box for Real after an excellent move. But gradually Lyon moved into the ascendancy, with Lisandro Lopez and Delgado threatening from the edge of the area.Cristiano Ronaldo, the Champions League top scorer this season coming into the game, provided plenty of showboating skills but produced little end product. The only clear-cut chance of the half came with the interval fast approaching.A corner from the right was only half cleared and Delgado let fly with a blistering volley that left Casillas stranded but cannoned off the upright. The game needed a goal and the hosts did not have to wait long after the interval. Some dreadful defending from Real allowed Makoun to pick up the ball in midfield and run completely unchallenged before letting fly with a quite superb effort from 25 yards that curled away into the top corner.Casillas was left helpless for the goal but a woeful clearance from the goalkeeper shortly after fell straight to Lisandro - only for the Argentine to drag his shot wide.Ronaldo responded with a long-range drive that was tipped round the post by Hugo Lloris but Madrid looked well short of a team tipped as potential winners. The Spanish side, who ended up with a strikeforce worth nearly £200m after Karim Benzema came off the bench, did increase the tempo as the final whistle approached.Ramos put a free header over the bar from a free-kick while Esteban Granero just failed to connect with a neat pull-back from Kaka but Lyon held on for the win and a slender advantage.Source: BBC
