Most of the rail link between Batsoona and the Tema port was reconstructed at the latter part of the year 2008. Although the NDC Government is currently working at completing what is left of the rail link as I write, a portion of the railway completed only in December 2008, as shown in the picture is rotting away at an alarming rate because of its proximity to the sea. Couldn’t the NDC government have taken steps to protect or complete the line earlier? How much more would it cost us as a nation for the same work to be redone? As a tax payer and a Ghanaian, I am concerned about needless waste because the pettiness successor governments have displayed since 1966 has cost this country more than we can imagine. A simple travel round this country will immediately reveal how millions of the tax payer’s money has been virtually wasted as many government construction projects have been abandoned by successor governments. The list of abandoned projects is endless. Some examples of previously abandoned projects are the Gold refinery, the Bui dam construction, the silos, the national museum, the science museum, catering rest houses dotted round the country and in recent time the Aveyime Rice Project which was abandoned for many years with equipment left to deteriorate. The national ID card project although ongoing, is one such project that I can bet will become another waste of scarce national resources. As Ghanaians we deserve better leadership and more effective use of our scarce resources. The current Government must take stock of projects in progress and quickly complete them in the national interest or clearly state why it cannot continue instead of just initiating new projects that may just be stopped by a successor Government. The pettiness of successor Governments must stop now.
