The Aboadze Thermal Plant has started to generate electricity with gas from Nigeria delivered by the West Africa Gas Pipeline.
The Volta River Authority (VRA) says it has been testing the pipelines for quite some time now and recently the volume of gas from Nigeria was increased substantially.
It marks a significant point in the operations of the West African Gas Pipeline project after several hitches resulted in a delay in the supply of gas through the pipelines which passes through several West African countries.
Steven Doku, an engineer at the Volta River Authority told Joy News' Dzifa Bampoh the availability of the gas will reduce the cost of electricity production in the country.
The Aboadze plant since its establishment had been operated with a more expensive crude oil.
Mr Doku however dismissed suggestions that government's decision to suspend hikes in electricity for consumers is as a result of the availability of the gas, adding it was merely coincidental.
The Corporate Affairs manager of the West Africa Gas Pipeline Project Harriet Wereko Brobby said the flow of the gas is attributable to the current stability in the Niger Delta area in Nigeria.
Rebels in the area had for years sabotaged the smooth implementation of the project, she said, hoping the current peace will be maintained.
He however cautioned that the situation is a bit unpredictable.
