Finance Minister, Seth Terkper says the four-lane Tema Motorway will be expanded to six lanes to ease traffic on the road.
Presenting the 2016 Budget Statement to parliament, Seth Terkper, said plans are ongoing to construct roads from the Tema port to the Motorway, which links the country’s capital to the industrial city, Tema.
“Plans are far advanced to construct four container terminals, an access road from the ports to the Motorway and expand the Motorway from four lanes to six lanes,” he announced.
Speaking about progress in the construction of road networks in the country, the Finance Minister said:
“Routine maintenance works were carried out on 4,819KM of trunk, 5300km of feeder and 5200km of urban road networks while periodic maintenance activities comprising regovernning, spot improvement and resealing works were carried out on 9.4km,252km and 2400metres of trunk, feeder and urban roads respectively”.
Currently, the 19-kilometre highway that links Tema to Accra is in a deplorable state as it is covered with deep potholes and road markings have been wiped off by the thousands of vehicles that ply the roads everyday. The road generates huge funds from road toll tickets daily.
Mr. Terkper promised that routine and periodic maintenance activities will be undertaken on several trunk, feeder and urban roads in 2016.
“These roads include Sawla-Wa roads, Kasoa By-pass, Kpone-Katamanso and Gulf City are, Winneba,” the Minister added.
According to Mr. Terkper, work on about 200km of trunk roads and 40km of urban roads including continuation on Nsawam-Apedwa, Kwafokrom- Apedwa, Enchi-Dadieso, Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Kasoa Interchange, Eastern Corridor roads, Asikuma Junction road will continue within budget constraints.
