Dutch airline KLM flew some passengers out of Accra to Amsterdam a little after midnight Tuesday, the first such flight in six days.
Flight restrictions have been in place since volcanic ash from Iceland engulfed the skies over most of Europe.
The restrictions were partially lifted in some areas on Monday after a meeting of European Union transport ministers following the dissipation of some of the clouds.
Local airline officials are hopeful they will be able to dispatch another flight tonight. The airline is, however, still unable to provide onward connections to other European destinations.
Joy Business has learnt the flight has been scheduled much later than the usual departure time because aviation experts believe it is the most suitable time under the present conditions.
Even though planes are once again taking to the skies over Europe, the situation still remains very unpredictable.
Speaking at a news conference, the Deputy Director of the European Agency that regulates airspace, Brian Flinn, of Euro Control said there is an optimistic outlook.
London’s biggest and Europe’s busiest airport, Heathrow, however remains closed.
