Next Generation Broadcasting launched its new pay television service, Smart TV on Friday despite opposition by the National Communications Authority (NCA).
The NCA says the company does not have a license to engage in broadcasting of any form even though it has authorization to import broadcasting equipment for the state broadcaster GBC.
The Director in Charge of Regulations and Licensing, Joshua Peprah, tells Joy Business it would be illegal for the company to launch any such service.
“We wrote to them that they cannot launch that service for the various reasons that they don’t have a license, that their current license only allows them to sell equipment,” he said.
Mr. Peprah further explains that even though the company has applied for a broadcasting license, it is yet to be granted because the NCA has put a freeze on all new licenses ahead of the drawing up of regulations for the anticipated digital television regime.
The company, however, disagrees with the NCA.
Country Manager for Next Generation Broadcasting, Yvonne Osei-Tutu tells Joy Business they would go ahead with the launch because it does not breach any regulation.
The company however launched on Friday and promised the best mix of news, entertainment and sports.
