Students of the Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon will embark on a demonstration on Thursday to protest attempts by university authorities to convert the hall into a mixed gender hall. The Executive Committee of the university took the decision after some students of the Hall heckled former United Nations Secretary-General and some dignitaries who attended this year’s congregation ceremony. Public Relations Officer of the University, Stella Amoah told Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoh the decision was taken in the “corporate interest” of the university. According to her, most behaviours she described as “unruly” could be traced to students of the Commonwealth Hall, adding those behaviours have tarnished the image of the university. By the executive committee decision, which is expected to take effect in September this year, the Commonwealth Hall will now become a mixed gender hall as well as a graduate hall. She dismissed assertions that the hall was going to be closed down or have its name changed. But the students of the hall, commonly known as Vandals, are not the least enthused. They have vowed to resist the decision by the executive committee of the university and are planning to embark on a massive demonstration to the Castle on Thursday to register their indignation. One of the students who spoke to Joy FM’s Yaw Ansu Gyeabour, said they will head to the Castle to present a petition to President John Evans Atta Mills. "On Thursday we are promising the university authorities that students of Commonwealth Hall and students of the university will hit the streets to the Castle," he confirmed. The students are hoping to present a petition to the president to step in and halt the implementation of the decision. He said the president has “72 working hours” to take a decision on the matter or they will advise themselves. According to him, the authorities' decision is preemptive, more so when the committee investigating the heckling of the former Secretary-General has not come out with its findings. Another student said the decision taken by the university authorities is perverse and meant to break the student’s front. He stressed that the heckling of Kofi Annan was not to embarrass him, but was a mere “culture” of escorting dignitaries who attend their ceremonies. Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
