Police in the Upper West Region have arrested three people in connection with the clashes involving supporters of the Hassan Ayariga and those of Dr Edward Mahama, two contestants vying for the flagbearership of the PNC.
The Regional Crime Officer Superintendent Alhaji Fuseini confirmed the arrest in an interview with Joy News' Upper West Regional correspondent Rafiq Salam.
The police also retrieved a gun from one of the suspects, Salam reported the crime officer as saying.
Supporters of the two flagbearer aspirants of the People's National Convention Dr Edward Mahama and Hassan Ayariga clashed at the Upper West Region, venue for party's Congress.
There were reports of gun shots during the clashes but the aspiring Chairman of the party Bernard Mornah who confirmed the incident said he cannot confirm the report of gun shots.
He however admitted hearing a sound similar to that of a gunshot but was quick to add that it may well be the sound of fire crackers.
No injuries have been reported yet.
The party is seeking to elect national leaders as well as a flagbearer to contest the 2016 elections but the run up to the elections has not been without controversy.
The elections had to be rescheduled from November to December due to allegations of a dud cheque said to have been paid by Bernard Mornah for his chairmanship slot.
There were threats of court suits to restrain the party from going ahead with the elections but the party managed to resolve some of the challenges clearing the path for today's congress.
Rafiq Salam reported that the Congress has begun in earnest with leading members of the party addressing the delegates.
