Public sector workers’ hopes of going home at the end of July with enhanced salaries under the single spine salary structure may just be dashed.
This follows comments by government’s pay master, the Controller and Accountant General that his department is not ready to implement the new structure.
R K. Tuffour told Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor during a visit to the Controller and Accountant General’s Department it will take between two to three months to prepare single spine payrolls that are free of the usual problems.
“I have already made an informal request for a minimum of two to three months for us to implement it.
“…If you give us one month we can do it; three weeks we can do it, but the result will not be like if you give us three months," he said
This comes despite several assurances by government that workers should be enjoying the enhanced salaries next month.
The Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission
George, Smith-Graham told Joy business the Account General must come clear on the details of the implementation of the new salary structure.
He said the 10 per cent salary increase announced recently for public workers is part of the implementation of the single spine which will start in July and urged the accountant general's office to expedite action in that regard.
