Thousands of delegates have started going through the process at the International Trade Fair Centre in Accra to select a presidential candidate for the 2016 polls.

Over 2,500 delegates would be selecting a winnable candidate from a list of four party stalwarts - Former party Chair, Samia Nkrumah, former General Secretary, Ivor Greenstreet, Bright Akwetey and Joseph Agyepong.

Samia Nkrumah, who is tipped to win the elections, says the legacy of her father – Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah – inspires her to lead the party.

“This year, the unexpected can happen. If the Nkrumahist ideals can overthrow the British then the same spirit today can overthrow the NDC and NPP system that is prevailing in Ghana”, she told Joy News report Latif Iddrisu at the event grounds Saturday.

Joseph Agyapong has also promised to provide logistics that would facilitate the party’s November 7 general elections when he is elected flagbearer. He has promised to buy new cars for the party.

“We have given some people to prove themselves, how far have they taken us? Where have they taken us? How many offices do you have? How many T-Shirts do you have? I am bringing more than 150 to 200 cars,” he said.

 Bright Akwetey also says he will seek the welfare of grassroots supporters of the party.

“I will go to the grounds to organize rallies. I will do what the CPP has been doing – organizing people at the grassroots, caring for the down-trodden and invite them to join me,” he promised to do when elected party leader.

CPP Communications Director, Abdul Kediri, has told Joy News security arrangements as well as the necessary logistics for a successful and incident free congress have been put in place.

The party’s national chairman Prof. Edmund Delle has allayed fears that there is an injunction on the congress following threat by a disqualified presidential aspirant hopeful Onsy Nkrumah to go to court to halt the process.

Onsy who claims to be the son of Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was disqualified after he presented a cheque instead of a banker’s draft for his filing fee.

In his statement of claim, the controversial politician asked the court to order the party to reinstate him in the race.

He told Newsfile news analysis programme on Joy FM and Multi TV Saturday that his disqualification marks a denial by the CPP to allow him support the party to become a force to reckon with in Ghana's political terrain.
