The National Peace Council says it was not consulted on the controversial appointment of its Executive Secretary to a committee of the Electoral Commission (EC).
The Chairman of the Council, Most Rev Prof Emmanuel Kwaku Asante told Accra-based Neat FM Thursday, the Council did not receive any formal communication requesting the appointment of representative to a Steering Committee of the EC.
"The last time the board met, there was no letter before us from the Electoral Commission asking us to nominate someone... As far as I am concerned as chairman, there is no such letter," Prof Asante said.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been running checks on the partisan composition of the 18-member committee and has picked out Dr. Karl Arhin and Francis Azuimah as National Democratic Congress (NDC) members.
Dr. Arhin has already stepped aside since the NPP complained about partisan inclusions on a committee they thought should be non-partisan.
Attention has since been brought on the appointment of Azuimah who is an NDC member in the Builsa North constituency, the NPP has pointed out.
Focusing on the procedure used to appoint him, the Accra-based radio station spoke to the Chairman of the National Peace Council who explained they only heard about the appointment in the media.
The Chairman said they congratulated Azuimah after hearing the news, but emphasized Azuimah’s appointment must have been in his personal capacity contrary to EC’s claim that he was to represent the Council.
Prof. Asante said when he was appointed by the EC to serve on a 5-member committee on the voter’s register, he served in his own capacity and not as a representative of the National Peace Council.
