Religious leaders in the country have been urged to lead the way towards a peaceful environment as preparations for the November general elections continue.
NDC parliamentary candidate for the lower West Akyem Constituency in the Eastern Region, Shirley Naana Ampem, says religious leaders should prevail on politicians and their supporters to conduct themselves well during the election period.
“There is the need for pastors, Imams and traditionalists to educate the people on the need for political tolerance to promote peace and tranquility before, during and after the elections," she said.
Shirley Naana Ampem made these remarks when she presented a number of bibles and Qurans to the Christian and Muslim communities in the constituency.
She also urged religious leaders to be politically neutral and suggested to political parties to organize seminars, symposia and other programmes to educate their supporters on their codes of conduct, political party laws and other electoral legislations.
"This will ensure that supporters of political parties tolerate their opponents to avoid antagonism, intimidation, use of 'machomen' to cause mayhem," she explained.
The Imam of Asamankese Sabon Zongo, Sheikh Isahaku, commended the initiative adopted by the politician.
He assured her that the Muslim community in the country would play a significant role in the country's bid to ensure a peace during and after the elections.
