The Minister of Works and Housing has dismissed calls for his resignation following the withdrawal of the STX housing deal from Parliament.
The NPP Member of Parliament for Obuasi, Edward Ennin in an interview with Joy News demanded the voluntary resignation of Alban Bagbin and two others- Dr Kwabena Duffour, Finance Minister and Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu, Attorney General, accusing them of doing a shoddy job on the controversial STX agreement.
He said the three should be sacked if they continue to hold on to their positions.
But in a reaction, Alban Bagbin told Joy FM’s Parliamentary Correspondent Araba Koomson that such demands are misplaced.
He took a swipe at the erstwhile NPP government who he said bulldozed several loan agreements through Parliament in spite of the many flaws inherent in them.
He cited the CNTCI and the IFC loans, the Representation of People’s Amendment Bill (ROPAB) and the controversial GT/Vodafone saga as some of the instances in which the NPP threw caution to the wind to pass agreements which he felt were inimical to the interest of the country.
“We believe that this country should not always be reinventing the stock in the mud and be repeating clear errors that others have committed,” he said.
“I thought that the ministers should be commended”… “There is nothing shameful; there is nothing wrong in allowing the committee to deliberate on the matter again.
“And I believe we should be commended and not condemned,” he emphasized.
Alban Bagbin noted that the turn of events may come as a disappointment to the Korea Republic whose President is scheduled in the country in two weeks to cut the sod for the building of the 30,000 housing units.
According to Alban Bagbin the agreement will be brought back and dealt with before Parliament rises on August 3, 2010.
