Workers of Kumasi zoological Gardens in Kumasi were thrown into a state of shock when an apparently hungry chimpanzee pounced on one of the zoo attendants, while he was conducting some school children round the facility.
Eye witness said when they got to the chimpanzee section of the Zoo, Mr. Gana (zoo attendant), in his attempt to give some bananas to the chimpanzee was not lucky, when the chimpanzee grabbed his right hand, bit him and in the process broke his finger bone.
The students quickly went to the aid of Mr. Gana and helped free him from his attacker. The Zoo attendant sustained various degrees of injuries and was subsequently rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was admitted for three days.
Confirming the story, the General Manager of the Kumasi Zoo. Mr. Emmanuel Nimo, said they were all surprised at what happened since such an incident has never happened in the zoo before.
He said the attendant had worked with them for several years and he is well known to the animals.
He however attributed what happened to some of the occasional occupation hazards that happen at work places.
When our reporter went to the zoo to follow up on the story, the worker who was attacked by the chimp had been given some time off duty, for the injury he sustained to be fully healed.
