Fishermen in Sekondi are threatening a street protest against plans to ban the use of lights in fishing.
A bill to that effect currently awaiting passage by Parliament hopes to scrap the use of high-voltage bulbs because government says it is unable to monitor and regulate its impact on the environment.
But the fisher folk say the low-cost technology boosts their catch by drawing larger shoals into their nets.
Executive Secretary of the Ghana In-Shore Boat Owners Association and 2005 National Best Farmer Andrews Tetteh says his colleagues would take on government if it goes ahead with the ban.
“I employ 125 people if you stop me that people you cause poverty to them,” he said, adding, “they should think twice against that law.”
He said if government want to ban light fishing, it must provide alternative solutions like marine engines and modern gadgets for fishing.
Mr. Tetteh is confident there would be no need for the country to import fish if the sector is given the necessary support.
