New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates in the Ablekuma North and South constituencies in the Greater Accra region will not vote in Saturday’s historic primary of the biggest opposition party in Ghana. The two constituencies, Ablekuma North and South respectively, were disenfranchised due to protracted court cases. Other constituencies like Obuasi, Subin and the latest, Asokwa, all in the Ashanti region which had also been bedeviled by lingering court cases have been cleared to vote. Mr. O.B. Amoah, spokesperson for the party’s Election Committee told Joy News that the constituencies were not able to even elect their polling station executives, which is very essential in the election process. “They have had long-standing disputes and could not elect their polling station executives, and it is based on the polling station executives that you even elect constituency executives, then to elect the regional and national executives.” He emphasized that since the two constituencies failed to put those structures in place, “obviously they have to be excluded”. Mr Amoah, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Nsawam-Aburi constituency in the Eastern Region, said the two do not have even photo albums (registers) that can be validated for the aspirants to know who and who would be voting. In all five candidates are vying for the sole slot and an estimated number of 113,000 delegates are expected to vote on Saturday. The election starts from 8am and closes at 3pm.
