Vice President John Dramani Mahama says the government will deliver on all promises it made to Ghanaians during the pre-Election 2008 campaigns.
Mr Mahama said the Mills-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) would perform to expectation to ensure it gets a renewed mandate in the 2012 elections.
“We shall deliver on all the promises that we made [to] you in the last election so that come 2012 there will be no doubt in anybody’s mind that President Atta Mills deserves a second term in office,” he said.
The vice president said this when he commissioned the Achimota-Mile 7 Interchange on Friday.
According to him, the project had been delayed because of the failure of the previous government to provide the necessary funding.
John Mahama however said the Mills administration has settled all the arrears to the contractors to speed up work on the projects.
In a swift rebuttal, however, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has denied the claim by the vice president.
Director of Communications for the party, Kwaku Kwarteng, said the Mr Mahama’s assertions are misleading.
Touching specifically on the Achimota-Mile 7 road, Mr Kwarteng said work was stalled because the NDC government, after assuming office, froze payments to many contractors “including those working on that project.”
“Now if government considers it necessary to pay more attention to that project, I think it should say so. It is obvious that the suggestion by the vice president has focused the discussion again on this government’s priorities," he told Joy News on Friday.
“If the money that was invested in sending people – party NDC foot soldiers - to South Africa had been put into that project, it would have moved faster. The resources that was invested into drinking tea during the Transition; if it had been put into that project it would have moved faster. [If] the $260 million that has been wired to STX in a dubious deal that already has government of Ghana guarantee had been invested into this project, we’ll not be having this discussion.
“I think it’s about time this government told the truth and moved this country in the way that Ghanaians expect,” Mr Kwarteng said.
