John Jinapor, Spokesperson for the Vice President, John Dramani Mahama, has denied media reports that he called for the firing of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mrs. Betty Mould-Iddrisu.
Mr Jinapor had said that the performance of the A-G was demoralising and grassroots supporters of the ruling party were justifiably disenchanted.
His comments followed a string of losses the A-G suffered in court relating to some high profile cases.
The latest legal defeat in the case of Ghana@50 trial where two officials of the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, Mr Kwadwo Mpiani and Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby were discharged by the Fast Track High Court seems to have hit the National Democratic Congress (NDC) quite hard in the face.
The Daily Guide newspaper Friday reported Mr. Jinapor as saying that the procedural errors that led to the two men being freed were inexcusable, and maintained that the A-G and his department are giving the opposition New Patriotic Party ammunition to use against the incumbent government.
But commenting on this issue as a panelist on Peace FM's ‘Kokrokoo’ Programme, John Jinapor denied ever saying that the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu should be sacked because she is losing too many cases.
“I don’t have the capacity to assess her work. We don’t determine the effectiveness of a (prosecutor) by a court case or by the number of cases lost in court. But I think the situation is worrying so she should find out what is going wrong,” he added.
He also mentioned that “Ghanaians need to make our democracy work effectively and so we should allow Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu to go in for the appeal. We can then learn more from the legal grounds on which she is standing to judge the case,” and then find out what will happen next.
“After that if someone has spent money or caused financial loss to the state, the person should be dealt with,” he added.
Mr. Jinapor feels that Ghanaians are dwelling too much on the fact that the Attorney-General and the NDC government as a whole are losing a number of its high-profile cases in court and may give the impression that they cannot fulfill their manifesto promises.
To him, they should balance the issues and juxtapose them with the positives of the government and not on the number of cases being lost.
