Campaign Manager for Nana Akufo-Addo in the just ended primaries of the New Patriotic Party is incensed with the “indecent haste” at which people are jostling for the vice presidential slot of the party.
“I find all these discussions rather curious and I ask myself why this indecent haste,” Boakye Agyarko told Joy News’ Bernard Saibu on Thursday.
Barely two weeks after Nana Addo was re-elected as the party’s flagbearer, the media have been flooded with reports about who is best to partner him for the 2012 general elections.
Avid supporters of some party leaders have been fronting for their idols to be picked, with names of Alan Kojo Kyerematen, vice-presidential candidate for the party in the 2008 general elections, Dr. Mahamodu Bawumia, former Northern Regional Minister, Moustapha Ali Iddris have all been making the rounds.
But Boakye Agyarko insists the aggressive jostling for the position is “self serving.” He maintained the party has clearly spelt out in its constitution when to nominate a vice-presidential candidate and will not be stampeded into making that decision now.
He said the party has very important strategic issues to deal with and finds these “pressure tactics” rather unfortunate.
“Every organisation must order its priorities along a certain time line. And considering the things we need to get done in order to win the 2012 elections, considerations of a running mate at this material moment is not a priority.”
Asked when the consideration will be made, he responded; “When we get to that bridge we will cross it.”
“This campaign will not be hurried or stampeded into ordering, reordering its priorities because of personal interest. No! This campaign is focused. It has time lines. It has ordered its priorities and irrespective of the hypotheticals and the hoopla, we intend to keep to our time lines,” he stated emphatically.
