Some former staff of the defunct Ghana Airways Wednesday called on the Government to thoroughly investigate the liquidation of the airline.Speaking with ASEMPA News, a former Secretary of Ghana Airways Senior Staff Association, Mr. Daniel Omane highlighted the plight of the staff since the collapse of the airline and called for a formation of a new Ghana Airways.He alleged that the former New Patriotic Party-led government had its own agenda with regards to the liquidation of the airline.Citing some unusual occurrences, he hinted that in 2004, the Senior Staff Association and the Local Union met with former President J.A. Kufuor at the Castle, Osu, to find solutions to Ghana Airways problems.He revealed that the then president was quick to order them to “shut up" in the course of explaining trends in the aviation industry to him.Daniel Omane further revealed that CEOs for the airline were replaced between 6 and 9 months during the NPP administration.He said the first CEO of Ghana Airways appointed during NPP’s tenure drew a salary of $10,000 per month. Mr. Omane also made references to assets, subsidiaries and royalties which were paid to the Ghana Airways but were never transparently accounted for.He added that it is even mysterious that the new, so-called Ghana International Airline which was formed out of Ghana Airways has also gone down.He described the liquidation as disgraceful and unconstitutional and said it is very humiliating for a country like Ghana not to own her own national carrier.Mr. Omane said the distressed ex-staff of the airline wants the ruling government to probe the cost of the liquidation exercise and to ascertain who bought the company's assets as well as the total income accrued from the sale of the assets.Story: Maame Afua Enos/Asempa News/Ghana
