The rush of water from underground, the stream created as a result of the burst and the big pools of water collected on the nearby highway are all gone. It’s a lot of relief for people living around the Mangoline Lane down the McCarthy Hill in Accra.
Myjoyonline.com carried the story about the volumes of treated water being lost as a broken pipeline in the area had been left unattended to for almost a month.
Water from one of the major distribution lines of the Ghana Water Company had filled the nearby drains to the brim as though it had rained for days in the area.
People in the area say they had contacted GWCL day earlier to fix the problem but very little had been done.
However, following the report by Myjoyonline.com, the burst has been sealed.
“It’s good. But next time they should not sit down for so much water to be lost before they take action,” a resident told Myjoyonline.com.
During our visit we sighted a big trench dug and copious amounts of soil scooped from around the pipeline, the region cordoned off.
Down the manhole, 12-inch plastic pipes have been joined with a coupling.
According to officials, distribution losses have been some of the major headaches of the water company.
The company is said to be losing over 12 million cedis worth of water monthly or 144 million cedis worth annually to losses as a result of illegal water connections. This money can build over 7200 boreholes for 7200 deprived communities in Ghana annually.
This was the situation Sunday evening.
