People have been warned to be extra careful during rains to avoid being struck by lightning.
According to geographer, Dr. Amamoo Otchere, lightning comes with high voltage electrical power that can kill.
“Any lightning is electricity, an atmospheric one. It contains high voltage of power, so when the lightning strikes, it strikes with high voltage of electrical power. So if you happen to be in its way then, unfortunately, it would be a natural disaster and the person would be struck dead,” he told Joy News.
A final-year student of the University for Development Studies in the Upper West Region was Monday killed by lightning.
The deceased, Faustina Mensah, a Communication Studies student, was reported to be on her way to lectures together with other colleagues when she was hit.
Deaths by lightning are often described as abnormal and so people often read superstitious meanings into them.
But Dr. Amamoo Otchere has warned that people who wear ornaments that are receptive to electricity should keep away from the rain.
He also advised homeowners, especially those who are putting up high rise buildings to have lightning arresters on them.
Meanwhile, colleagues of the late Faustina Mensah have expressed shock about her death and have called on the school authorities to investigate her untimely death.
They told Joy FM’s Upper West correspondent Rafiq Salam that Miss Mensah’s situation is only one of many mysterious deaths that have struck the university.
