The chief of Kwahenkrom, one of the communities most hit by floods in the Central region, has ordered the immediate demolition of weak buildings as torrential rains continue to wreak havoc.

Nana Kwahen V’s order comes as six continuous days of rains and floodwaters have collapsed buildings resulting in the death of five and many homes submerged.

It has rained continuously in the Central region since Thursday, June 9. As a result, many places got flooded with some buildings’ roofs ripped off and collapsing.

The buildings collapsed as a result of the weakening of the structure by the rains.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has been on a rescue mission in helping those who are displaced.

Narrating what happened, Nana Kwahen V said he was called by one of his elders and informed of happenings in Kwahekrom.

Upon reaching there, he said he saw half of a building collapsed with a child lying on the floor covered with a cloth.

An eight-year-old who was coming to meet her mother who was at a meeting in the house became an unfortunate victim when half of the building collapsed on her.

She died instantly. The other victim, Sikayena, died on the way to the hospital. 

Kwesi Kum, a resident returned from his farm to meet his wife and child dead after their building also collapsed on them.

Kum’s elder brother, Opanyin Kweku Essoun, another husband who lost his wife in a similar circumstance, said the family wants the bodies so they can give them a befitting burial.

They are appealing for assistance to help bury the dead.

Joy News’s regional correspondent, Richard Kojo Nyarko reports that most of the buildings in the township built with mud, bricks, blocks and other materials look frail.

Nyarko reports that Nana Kwahen V has therefore ordered that the owners of the buildings must pull them down or work on them to forestall any future calamity as the torrential rains have begun.
