Mr Joseph Z. Amenowode, Volta Regional Minister, has said the region would experience huge infrastructural development in the roads, housing and education sectors next year. He described the development as unprecedented, saying, it would transform the region's economy and urged the people to position themselves to take advantage of the opportunities. Mr Amenowode said this at the general session of the Hohoe Municipal Assembly, at the weekend. He said principal among the projects is the eastern corridor road, extending from Asikuma through Hohoe to Nkwanta towards the Northern Region; and the commencement of the University of Health and Allied Sciences. Mr Amenowode, also Member of Parliament for Hohoe North, said apart from the major road construction, all auxiliary roads would be reconstructed. He said works on the Akatsi-Dzodze-Akanu, Akatsi-Aflao, Ho-Fume and Asukawkaw-Dambai roads were progressing steadily. Others, including, the Bame-Kpedze, Abutia-Juapong, Wegbe-Alavanyo-Nkonya, Vuinta-Leklebi roads had been awarded. Mr Amenowode said the expertise of the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces would be utilised to construct hard-to-reach roads, including Kpeve-Goviefe, Logba Alakpeti-Logba Klikpo and Nyagbo Konda roads. On housing, the Regional Minister said about 1,400 units are anticipated to be constructed in the region with about 300 housing units for the security agencies beginning the project. He said works on the 60 one-storey dormitories, 18 administrative blocks and 12 dining halls, aimed at providing the requisite facilities to accommodate the large numbers of students, were on course. Mr Amenowode said 80,000 out of the region's allocation of 130,000 free school uniforms and 2.5 million free exercise books had been distributed. He announced that there were 315 'under-trees schools' in the region, saying a contract had been awarded for the construction of a 100 six-unit classroom blocks for them. Mr Amenowode commended Chiefs for donating large tracts of land for the University project. Mr Jacob Prince Hayibor, Member of Parliament for Hohoe South, said the massive infrastructural development that had begun in the region attests to President John Evans Atta Mills's "Better Ghana" agenda. He urged party members to "shine their eyes" and not to be clouded by their consideration for material acquisitions at the expense of working to redeem the country from under-development, disease and squalor.
