The Volta River Authority has said it may continue spilling the Akosombo Dam throughout the week. It first opened the floodgates of the dam yesterday to save it from collapse.
The water in the dam has reached a historic level not seen in 20 years. Prior to the opening of the dam the VRA announced that some selected communities were at the risk of being adversely affected.
But the Public Relations Manager of the VRA, Gertrude Koomson, assured communities living downstream that they will not be affected because the VRA is managing the spillage.
She said the spillage will be done gradually to try and control the rate of flow and minimize of risk of flooding that may affect residents near the dam.
Mrs Koomson expressed the hope that rising water level of the dam will stabilize to avert a forced persistent spillage that may cause flooding.
