A 36-year-old man who paraded as a member of staff of the Ministry of National Security has been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
The suspect, Ernest Ahoto, was arrested at the CID Headquarters in Accra where he had gone to interrogate a suspect who had been arrested for fraud.
According to the Deputy Director-General of the CID, Mr Patrick Timbilla, Ahoto had been going round arresting people and claiming to be a member of staff of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) stationed at the National Security Head Office.
He said some time in December last year Ahoto assisted a complainant in a fraud case to arrest a suspect and sent him to the CID Headquarters.
He said since then Ahoto kept accompanying the complainant anytime he visited the CID Headquarters.
Mr Timbilla said Ahoto's behaviour became suspicious, as he always wanted to be involved in the interrogation of suspects.
He said when the complainant was questioned about Ahoto's identity, he replied that he was a BNI official but when the suspect was confronted, he denied coming from the BNI.
The Deputy Director-General said a search conducted on Ahoto revealed a National Security identity card bearing his name and photograph. He claimed that it had been issued to him by National Security.
Mr Timbilla said when the ID card was sent to the National Security for verification, it turned out to be fake so Ahoto was detained.
He said the suspect was believed to have defrauded a number of people and therefore appealed to the general public, especially those who might have fallen victim to the activities of the suspect, to report at the CID Headquarters and assist in investigations.
