If you hate turbulence on a flight, you'll probably be left feeling a bit helpless as your plane jerks around.

But you'll be relieved to hear that there's a way you can lessen the effects of turbulence - and it's all down to where you sit.

Bruno Gillissen, an airline pilot, answered a question on Q&A site Quora asking where the least bumpy planes on the plane are located.

He said he was "amazed at how many fellow pilots answer this wrong".

Bruno says to check his theory was correct, he asked four flight attendants to point to the part of a plane diagram they felt had the seats which were more affected by turbulence.

"All four agreed upon the back of the plane being the worst place," he said.

"All pilots would agree with this as well I think."

"Three out of the four were convinced the least turbulence is felt in the very front; only one of them pointed to somewhere over the wings.

"The three who had no doubt it was the front of the plane were female flight attendants with more experience. The one who disagreed and opted for the wing zone was a junior male flight attendant."

"The three female flight attendants agree with most airline crew that the least turbulence is in the front of the airplane. That is consistent with my experience."

Bruno explains that the zones in the front of the plane are ahead of the centre of gravity, which is somewhere between the wings in the front section.

The back of the plane is the worst section because "the elevator is working hard to try and restore things to the way they were."

So, if you hate turbulence, try to nab a seat in the front of the plane.
