Today marks the celebration of One Hundredth year of the International Women’s Day. The day set aside to appreciate women for their contribution towards the development of a better world. It is with this backdrop that the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) wishes to commend all women in all spheres of life regardless of their religious, cultural, race or academic credentials. We also hope that as you celebrate the day, you take the opportunity to reach out to the young ladies who are coming up to be women to also get to the highest points of their endeavors.
GNECC wants to commend the government of Ghana having passed a range of legislation and ratified various conventions and treaties that seek to promote the rights of women and children and their development, demonstrating a strong commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
GNECC wishes to remind government to put in place measures to make these legislations, thus CEDAW 1986, CRC, April 1990, MDGs 2000 and others implemented in order to make education more accessible to all women. We again call on ‘all who matter’ in education to ensure girls are able to enjoy their rights to education and participation in a violence-free school environment in Ghana.
GNECC calls on government for an affirmative action to address the issue of low participation of women in decision making that results in discrimination against women at all levels right down to girls in schools. GNECC believes this can be resolved by giving 30% quota to women on all decision making boards.
As the day represents the 100th year celebration we believe if more effort is put into adequate training of teachers in gender-sensitivity, we can create a more gender-friendly school environment.
