The National Organiser of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Yaw Boateng Gyan has said it is unnecessary for the party to change its leader, a position contrary to that of the former first couple – ex-President Rawlings and former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings - who maintain the NDC would lose power with President JEA Mills as leader.
Comparing the NDC to a football match, the National Youth Organizer asked whether it would be prudent that a decision is taken to replace Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan with a striker from the Black Queens team just because Gyan was unable to score a goal.
During the launch of her campaign for the flagbearership position of the party, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, her husband former President Rawlings as well as some leading members of the party who were at the function to pledge their support, maintained that the NDC government had ‘veered off the road’ and that the leader must be changed.
However Mr Boateng Gyan, on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo programme Thursday, noted that those who believe the NDC needs a new leader are deceiving themselves because their position does not represent that of the delegates who will vote at the party’s Congress to choose a leader.
He said the delegates were solidly behind the President and would ensure he wins the flagbearership slot once again. He was hopeful that Mrs Rawlings would accept her defeat as the case would be come July 8th.
Mr Gyan added that there were many qualified personalities in the NDC who were equally capable of leading the party and that the founder could support any of such people other than his wife.
He stated that the party’s national executives - who refused an invitation to attend the launch of Konadu’s campaign - do not agree with the ex-president’s position that only his wife could be trusted to lead the NDC.
He advised Mrs Rawlings to be grateful to God for allowing her husband to rule Ghana for 19-years and support others to walk a similar path.
