The Assistant Director of Migration Management at the Ghana Immigration Service, Judith Dzokoto has stated that the service’s has a key role to play in the regional integration process within ECOWAS.
Madam Judith Dzokoto was speaking at a public forum on regional integration process held in Sunyani and organized by the Integrated Social Development Centre (ISODEC) recently.
She said the service was ready to work with other non state actors to facilitate the integration process.
Among other things, Madam Dzokoto recommended expedited action on the national Identification process saying it will ensure easy identification of citizens and border residents alike.
She further called on traditional leaders and the local government authorities to collaborate with border agencies to ensure that citizens and foreigners are given the needed support.
Cataloging the challenges facing the GIS, Madam Dzokoto said many people tend to abuse the Free Movement Protocol (which allows citizens of nations in the sub-region to commute without visas) as some people overstay their permits.
She said some commuters also use unapproved routes and thereby promote smuggling and movement of criminals who are fleeing from the law in the countries of their residence.
Dr. Yakubu Zakaria, Project Director of ISODEC on his part said the forum is part of a series of events to bring all Non State Actors together to explore how people can actually influence decisions taken by government representatives at ECOWAS.
He underscored the importance of all key groups in the process to ensure that ECOWAS begins to reflect the aspirations of the people at the grassroots level.
