Breast cancer is said to be the first leading cause of death among women in Ghana according to Specialist in Breast Pathology, Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai.
She also revealed that, one in eight women die from the disease due to numerous factors which include late detection and fear of stigmatization.
The breast cancer advocate who is the President of NGO Breast Care International revealed this while delivering a lecture which was under the auspices of Rotary Club in Kumasi.
She indicated that, breast cancer was a reality in Ghana but unfortunately there had not been much awareness on it especially among women.
Dr. Wiafe-Addai who is also Chief Executive Officer of Peace and Love Hospital said the NGO had created much awareness about the disease but the problem was how to fight poverty, illiteracy and ignorance in the society.
"Most of the affected women are poor and their men leave them when they have the disease. When the foundation has enough funds, many women would be treated," she added.
Dr. Wiafe-Addai encouraged women to have regular breast screenings and observe healthy lifestyles to decrease the chances of breast cancer.
For his part, vice President of Accra Rotary, Samuel Thompson thanked Dr. Addai for the insightful lecture.
He bemoaned how breast related diseases had robbed many families of able-bodied breadwinners and promised Rotary resolve to the NGO for more awareness on breast cancer.
Since Rotary is committed to serving humanity, Samuel Thompson pledged their support to ensure every women in Ghana is educated on breast cancer.
