A suspected armed robber was killed at dawn on Tuesday, when he and his gang exchanged fire with the Police at Shai Hills on the Accra-Ho highway.
The highwaymen were said to have robbed occupants of two vehicles and in the process killed one person on a tipper - truck, identified as Moses, the driver’s mate.
The Commanding Officer of the Police Highway Patrol Unit, Superintendent Obed Dzikunu, said that at about 1:45a.m, a team from the unit on patrol on the Accra highway spotted from a distance two vehicles parked in the middle of the road.
He said when the Police arrived at the scene; they saw a tipper truck with registration number AS 7993-10, and a bus with registration number GT 6310010, whose occupants looked stranded with some of them weeping.
Mr. Dzikunu, narrating their ordeal, said the passengers told the Police that the mate of the tipper truck was shot during a struggle with a gang of highway men who had escaped into the bush.
The Police pursued the robbers and in an ensuing shoot-out one of them was killed. The rest escaped.
Mr. Dzikunu said the Police found among other items, a Russian made shot gun and a live cartridge, abandoned by the robbers at the scene.
He said the Police suspected that some of the robbers fled with gunshot wounds and appealed to the public especially, people living in the Shai Hills area to report anybody with gunshot wounds to the Police.
The bodies of the mate and the suspected robber have been deported at the Police Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
