The presence of over a thousand security personnel and the use of close circuit television cameras at the up-coming congress of the National Democratic Congress [NDC] in the Brong Ahafo regional capital, Sunyani, has been described as an overkill and intimidating.
The comment came from none other than Mr. Kofi Adams, the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC who doubles as the official spokesperson of ex-President Jerry Rawlings and his family.
Speaking to host of Adom TV’s morning Show Badwam host, Kwadwo Asare-Baffour Acheampong on Thursday, Mr. Adams said generally the Konadu campaign team was satisfied with preparations by the leadership of the party for the congress.
He however expressed reservations about the delay in the release of the proxy voters register to the Nana Konadu Campaign Team, barely 24 hours to Congress to decide who leads the NDC to the 2012 Presidential polls.
Kofi Adams claimed the proxy voters register, under normal circumstances, should have been ready two weeks before voting during each congress.
The deputy general secretary also said instead of uniformed personnel going to parade themselves at the congress fully armed as if it were a battle ground, the party could ask for plain clothes personnel so as not to intimidate delegates.
Mr. Adams said the party ought not behave as if the Sunyani Congress was the first time the party has been in power and therefore has to abuse the use of security.
Meanwhile the police have given assurances it will give protection to everyone coming to the congress of the NDC.
Acting Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, DSP Cephas Arthur told BAWADM this was not the first of such an activity for the police and they would be up to the task between Friday and Sunday.
