Basic school teachers at Jaman North District in the Brong Ahafo Region are aggrieved over deductions in their salaries by the District Director of Education Sulgentius Nuokpem.
The teachers, numbering about seven hundred (700) claimed the Director first deducted GH¢1.00 and subsequently increased it to GH¢5.00.
The teachers told Asempa News that the Director has been deducting the amount for the past two months, ostensibly for their welfare, without informing them.
However, when they complained, he threatened to transfer them to other districts, they claimed.
When contacted, Mr. Nuokpem admitted the deductions but said the teachers were duly informed.
“We all discussed it and agreed that we should have a welfare club and we agreed on an amount. Where we thought there was going to be a problem was at the Senior High School but they accepted and we started," the Director added.
Explaining further, he said the idea was conceived in 2008 when he was posted to the District with the approval of the Ghana National Association of Teachers at the District.
“The money is not coming into my pocket. The money is not going into my account. We have a separate account. I am not a signatory to the account,” he stressed.
The Director however said those who are complaining are those who have been transferred from the place. He has therefore directed them to request for the transfer of their deductions.
