The Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings (FONKAR) have pledged to stand by the former first lady despite her failure to win the flagbearer bid.
Mrs Rawlings was trounced by President Mills in the National Democratic Congress’ flagbearership election over the weekend at Sunyani where she got 90 votes representing 3.1% with the president receiving an overwhelming 2,771 votes representing 96.9%.
Her campaign team has faulted the entire process describing the results as a choreographed one. Her supporters are said to have been intimidated and other delegates paid hefty sums to vote for president Mills.
It is now being speculated that Mrs. Rawlings might just announce she is breaking away from the party to contest the 2012 elections as an independent.
The group says she still has a lot to offer the nation even though they will heed to the decision by party delegates at the Sunyani congress.
Spokesperson of the group Dela Coffie, told Joy News that even though they have issues with the result and the conduct of the elections "we believe that once congress has spoken the party has to [listen].”
He said everyone who believes in the ideology of the party must join hands for the 2012 elections.
