The government of the Netherlands has provided two million Euros for the implementation of the “Girl Child Project” in the Eastern and Upper West regions of Ghana.
Four organizations which are to execute the project in the beneficiary regions will each receive 500.000 Euros.
The organizations are the Sissala Literacy and Development Programme (SILDEP) and the Centre for the Alleviation of Poverty and Child Support (CAPECS) in the Upper West region, while the Ark Foundation and CRESCENT organization would take care of the Eastern region.
The four civil society organizations and Plan Ghana, an international child centred organization have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to implement the project over a period of five years.
Mr Moses Luri and Mr Mustapha Susolo the Executive Directors of SILDEP and CAPECS respectively, briefed the GNA in Wa on Wednesday after signing the MOU with Mr Samuel Paulos, Plan Ghana Country Director in Accra.
Mr Susolo explained that the project seeks to empower young girls between the ages of 10 and 17 years in school and young women aged between 18 and 24 years out of school.
This he said was targeted at helping Ghana to meet the Millennium Development Goals two and three by 2015.
Mr Luri said the project covered key areas such as education, child rights protection as well as creating economic and political opportunities for young girls and young women.
