A 65-year-old woman in Accra is on the verge of destitution following what appears to be a failure of the Ghana Education Service to process the payment of her pension package.
Madam Rebecca Anku worked under the GES for 34 years and retired in 2005. Since then, she says, she has been compelled to move from office to office to get the necessary paper work done in order for her pension to be paid.
Looking very frail, Madam Anku told Joy FM Monday morning she spent most of her service to the Ghana Education Service in the classroom. She entered the teaching field with a bachelor degree from the University of Ghana in 1971.
She said she initially received a monthly allowance of GHc266, which she said “was below my qualification”, but the GES failed to tell her there was a problem in processing her retirement package.
Meanwhile, an official of the GES confirmed that there are issues with the payment of Madam Anku’s pension and assured that those issues are being looked into.
