Dozens of farmers were trapped on their farms after the Birim River broke its banks and flooded surrounding communities in the Atiwa District of the Eastern Region. The farmers including women and children reportedly spent last night on the banks of a stream.Officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation are using boats to ferry the farmers to safety.Isaac Osei Owusu, one of the trapped victims, told Joy news people in the communities were preparing for the Ohum Festival and had gone to the farm on Monday to harvest some farm produce. He said it was on their return that they encountered the overflown river, which had covered the bridge on Birim River, rendering it unusable.Isaac Owusu said the farmers numbering over 120 had no choice but to “sleep near the river bank”.He said the Assemblyman for that area was reached on phone the following day, who in turn informed the District Chief Executive who came to their rescue.Source: Joy News/Myjoyonline.com
