Nine people died on the spot and over 30 others were seriously injured when the bus in which they were travelling veered off its lane and somersaulted into a ditch at Agbaflome, near Akatsi in the Volta Region at dawn on Wednesday.
Some of the injured trapped under the vehicle were rescued by a combined team of police and fire service personnel using a crane to lift the vehicle off them.
The Akatsi District Police Commander, DSP Korku Fiakpui, told the Ghanaian Times newspaper on phone that the accident occurred at about 4:15a.m. when the bus travelling from La Cote d’Ivoire to Aflao, skidded from the road as the driver attempted to negotiate a curve to join the main.
He said the death of five men and four women believed to be Ivorians, had been conveyed to the Sogakofe Government Hospital mortuary, while those injured, aged between 30 and 60 years, are receiving treatment at the Akatsi-Abor and the St Paul’s hospitals.
An eyewitness, Alhassan Iddrisu, a driver of the New Times Corporation said he arrived at the scene minutes after the accident and informed the police.
He attributed the accident to the absence of warning signs on the road which is under construction.
