The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has dispatched relief items to flood-hit communities in the Eastern Region.
About eight communities have been flooded after the Birim River broke its banks following hours of rainfall last Monday.
NADMO says about eight hundred people have so far been displaced.
“We realized about one-third of the community had been submerged; was under water,” Eastern Regional Coordinator of NADMO Ransford Owusu Boakye said.
“Let me say for now we have been able to get all the waters away but they need some relief items that we are organizing now. We’ve been able to organize some relief items from the national headquarters.”
The items include mattresses, blankets, polymers and buckets.
The downpour that triggered the floods is said to have lasted for nine hours.
The worst affected communities include Jejeti, Anyinam, and Mampong in the Atiwa district and Osinor and Juaso in the Fanteakwa district.
Several farmlands were also submerged and a section of the Accra-Kumasi road. Some vehicles which attempted to brave the floods were washed away.
One of the affected residents and former Chief of Defense Staff, Lt. Gen. J.B. Danquah had to seek refuge on the first floor of his storey building.
A newly-built health centre for Jejeti was also affected.
Mary Datteh, a Principal Midwifery Officer at the centre says over 6,000 folders and other equipment have been totally destroyed.
Other victims said their domestic animals were swept away.
