Security analyst Dr. Kwesi Aning has lashed out at MPs for politicizing government's intention to acquire five new jets for the Ghana Armed Forces.
In the run–up to the 2008 elections, the then National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority kicked against moves by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration to acquire two jets - one for the Executive and the other for the military.
History repeated itself on Wednesday as the NPP MPs, now the Minority, questioned the acquisition of five jets raising doubts about the cost of the aircraft.
But security analyst with the Kofi Annan Peace Keeping Centre, Dr. Kwesi Aning says the posture of the MPs is worrying.
“Parliament's behaviour now and parliament's behaviour in 2008 when Mr. Kufuor ordered the Falcon jets is far from satisfactory. I felt sad as a Ghanaian and as a tax payer that my parliamentarians were more interested in partisanship than in protecting my interest as a Ghanaian and in protecting the reputation and dignity of Ghana,” he stated.
He said the behaviour of the MPs on Wednesday “leaves a very sour taste in my mouth and certainly by their behaviour, it’s clear that both sides have failed the people of this country.”
Dr. Kwesi Aning also rejected criticisms by the Minority that prices of some of the jets have been inflated for corrupt purpose, insisting the cost of these jets can be easily resolved even though listening to the Defence Minister, there is no indication that the prices have been inflated as is being alleged by the Minority.
