The New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for New Juaben North, in the Eastern Region, Hackman Owusu Agyemang has called for public hearings of Parliamentary Committee sittings.
The MP who was the Minister for Interior during the Kufour administration, said committee sittings should not be in-camera, but should be opened to the public to share their views on topics under discussion.
He added that if expert advice is given to the committees it will help for effective discharge of committee duties.
Mr. Hackman Owusu Agyemang gave the advice in reaction to comments by Head of the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Training Centre, that select committees should consult experts for advice in taking key development decisions.
Dr. Kwesi Aning had earlier lashed out at the select committee for Interior and Defence for not seeking expert advice in the purchasing of five aircraft for the Ghana Armed Forces to the tune of $250 dollars.
Hackman Owusu Agyemang told Adom FM on Friday that, giving access to the public to share their views on key issues will deepen tremendously democratic governance in the country.
He added that the public should be invited as it is done with Appointments and Public Accounts Committees.
Meanwhile, Dr. Kwesi Aning has advised that parliament should invite companies that supply military equipment when they want to purchase such items.
‘Next time it should never happen that those who are selling will not appear before the defence and interior committee. The committee and the technical committee of the company should meet and do initial assessment of the purchasing before the final report is presented in parliament’, he stressed.
