Several persons sustained severe injuries when four vehicles were involved in an accident Monday morning in Accra.
The multiple accident occured on the Independence Avenue road near the Ako Adjei Interchange.
No death was recorded on the scene while the injured were sent to the 37 Military Hospital.
Most of the injured, according eyewitness accounts, were occupants of a Nissan Micra cab with registration number GS 3125 – 11 carrying a woman and her one-and-half-year old baby, and a Mercedes Benz Splinter with registration number GR 6393-09 loaded with passengers.
An eyewitness told Myjoyonline.com that a Nissan Pathfinder belonging to UT Bank heading towards Accra attempted to overtake the Splinter and hit the back of the Splinter in the process.
Because the Pathfinder was speeding, the eyewitness said, the driver lost control, with the vehicle running through the reserve planted with ornamental flowers and which divides the dual carriageway and ended up smashing into two cars approaching from the opposite direction.
Others who witnessed the accident said rescuers struggled to remove the victims due to the badly mangled vehicles.
A policeman on official guard duties at a nearby residencial facility told Myjoyonline.com he only heard prolonged screeching and a loud thudding sound and when rushed out he found that the vehicles had been thrown apart as a result of the accident.
