The final funeral rites of the late Chairman of the National Commission for Civic Education, Mr. Larry Bimi have been held in Accra, with thousands including top politicians turning out to pay their last respects.
The funeral was attended by the Vice President John Mahama, former Vice President Aliu Mahama, government functionaries and family members of Mr. Bimi.
The 66-year old lawyer died a week ago and was buried almost immediately in accordance with the Islamic tradition.
In his tribute, the Vice President said the late Lawyer lived a live worth remembering. “Indeed Lary Bimi’s life speaks for itself,” he said.
Mr Mahama noted that after death, what remains of a man is “the legacy that you leave behind and for Mr Larry Bimi, his life has been one of public service, one of service to his people, one of service to his country.”
Recounting some of the noble things the late Larry Bimi did, Vice-President Mahama said the late NCCE boss, as a lawyer, offered free legal services to those who could not afford.
“Larry Bimi was a friend to all; his doors were always open, his gate was always open, you could drive at any time of the day; morning, noon or night and Larry Bimi would have an ear for you,” he stated.
The Vice-President said the late Larry Bimi’s humility, honesty and frankness - both in public and private life - must be emulated. “Larry would tell you as politely as possible what he needed to tell you without fear or favour and often his advice was precise and very useful.”
The late Lawyer’s wife, Hajia Hanutu Abubakar Bimi praised her late husband’s unyielding commitment to building the country.
She also praised her late husband for fulfilling his marital duties in spite of his heavy schedule.
Former vice President, John Aliu Mahama described the late Larry Bimi as a self-made man and a champion of democracy.
